How to Use the Midterm Grade Calculator
Midterm season is when students and teachers both need clarity fast — "How did I do on the midterm?", "What does this score mean for my final grade?", "What do I need to score to still get a B in this course?" Our calculator answers all three in seconds.
What Is a Midterm Grade Calculator?
A Midterm Grade Calculator is a free online tool that converts your midterm exam score into a percentage grade, letter grade, and GPA — and optionally combines it with your pre-midterm course average to project your running course grade. It helps both students and teachers understand where they stand at the halfway point of a semester or academic term.
The midterm is usually the most important checkpoint of a course. A strong midterm grade confirms you are on track. A weak midterm grade is a warning signal — but it is not too late to recover, especially when the second half of the course and the final exam still carry significant weight.
"The midterm is not just an exam — it is a diagnostic. It tells you exactly which topics you have mastered and which need more work before the final exam. Act on that information immediately."
The Midterm Grade Formula
For a simple midterm score conversion:
Midterm % = (Points Scored ÷ Total Points Possible) × 100
To calculate your projected course grade including the midterm:
Course Grade = (Pre-Midterm Grade × Pre-Mid Weight%) + (Midterm % × Mid Weight%)
Example: Pre-midterm average 82%, midterm weight 30%, midterm score 74%
Course Grade = (82 × 0.70) + (74 × 0.30) = 57.4 + 22.2 = 79.6% (C+)
Midterm Grade Reference Table
| Midterm Score | Percentage | Letter Grade | GPA | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95 / 100 | 95% | A | 4.0 | Excellent — maintain this standard |
| 87 / 100 | 87% | B+ | 3.3 | Good — small push for A in finals |
| 82 / 100 | 82% | B | 3.0 | Solid — well above passing |
| 75 / 100 | 75% | C+ | 2.3 | Average — focus on weak topics now |
| 70 / 100 | 70% | C- | 1.7 | Passing — needs improvement in finals |
| 63 / 100 | 63% | D | 1.0 | At risk — change strategy now |
| 55 / 100 | 55% | F | 0.0 | Failing — seek teacher support urgently |
Real Midterm Situations — Answered
Student: I scored 68% on my midterm. Is my course grade ruined?
Not at all — if the midterm is 30% of your grade and you had an 80% going into it: Course grade = (80 × 0.70) + (68 × 0.30) = 56 + 20.4 = 76.4% (C+). That is still a comfortable passing grade. With a strong second half and final exam, you can push this back above 80%. The midterm is just one data point — not the verdict.
Student: My midterm counts for 40%. I scored 55%. What do I need on the final to pass?
If the final counts 40% and you had 75% pre-midterm: After midterm course grade = (75 × 0.20) + (55 × 0.40) = 15 + 22 = 37% so far of the course. With 40% remaining (final): you need (60 − 37) ÷ 0.40 = 57.5% on the final to pass at 60%. That is very achievable. Use our Final Grade Calculator to work out your exact final exam requirement.
Teacher: How do I calculate a midterm grade that includes homework and a test?
Use Weighted Components mode. Enter each element with its weight: Homework (25%), Mid-semester test (35%), Midterm exam (40%). The calculator gives you the weighted midterm average, identifies the strongest and weakest components, and produces a letter grade. Use this to quickly identify which students need intervention before the final exam.
Student: I want a B in the course. What do I need on the midterm?
Use the "What Do I Need?" mode. Enter your pre-midterm average, the midterm weight, target grade (80% for a B), and the remaining course weight after the midterm. The calculator tells you the exact score you need on the midterm exam to stay on track for your target grade — and adjusts for the remaining assignments too.
For teachers: This calculator helps you quickly communicate to students what their midterm result means in context of their full course grade — not just as an isolated score. Share the projected course grade with each student to motivate improvement in the second half.
