About This Tool

What Is a Semester Grade Calculator?

A Semester Grade Calculator is a free online tool that computes your overall semester average by combining all your subject grades, weighted by the number of credit hours each course carries. It eliminates manual calculation errors and gives you an instant, accurate picture of your academic performance.

Unlike a simple average calculator that treats all subjects equally, a proper semester grade calculator accounts for the fact that a 4-credit Math course should count more than a 1-credit elective. Our tool handles both approaches — weighted and simple — so you always get the right result for your specific school system.

"A weighted semester GPA more accurately reflects your academic performance because it accounts for the difficulty and importance of each course you took."

The Semester Grade Formula

For a weighted semester average, the standard formula used by most colleges is:

Semester Average = Σ (Subject Grade × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

Example: Math 85% × 4 credits + English 78% × 3 credits + Science 90% × 4 credits = (340 + 234 + 360) ÷ 11 = 85.1% (B). Our calculator does this automatically.

Who Is the Semester Grade Calculator For?

  • College and university students — Calculate your semester GPA before official results. Find out exactly where you stand academically and which subjects are pulling your average down.
  • High school students — Track your grades across all subjects and see your weighted semester average. Know your standing before report cards are issued.
  • International students — Convert your semester percentage to a US GPA on the 4.0 scale for scholarship applications, transfer credits, or study abroad requirements.

  • Teachers and academic advisors — Quickly compute a student's semester standing across multiple courses and identify academic risk before final results.

How Is a Semester Grade Different from a Quarter Grade?

A semester covers roughly half an academic year — typically 15 to 18 weeks. A quarter covers one-fourth of the year — about 10 weeks. Most US colleges run on semesters (two per year), while many high schools use quarters (four per year). If your school uses quarters, use our Quarter Grade Calculator instead. For GPA across multiple semesters, use our GPA & CGPA Calculator.

What Is a Good Semester GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or above (B average, 83%+) is generally considered a good semester result in US colleges. A GPA of 3.5 or above (90%+) is excellent and may qualify for Dean's List recognition. Most scholarships and graduate programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0. Below 2.0 (70%) for two consecutive semesters may put a student on academic probation.
