NUST Grading System

NUST Official 4.0 Grading Scale

NUST calculates your GPA and CGPA using a 4.0 scale. Grades at NUST are often relative to class performance, but they align with these standard grade points. To find your semester GPA, multiply the grade points of each course by its credit hours, sum them up, and divide by the total semester credit hours.

NUST Relative Grading: NUST uses a relative grading system where your final letter grade depends not only on your absolute marks but also on the performance distribution of your entire class. Even high marks may result in a B+ if the class average is high. However, once a letter grade is assigned, the grade point value is fixed as shown above.

Semester GPA Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours

Example: Course 1 (3 Credits) = B (3.0) + Course 2 (4 Credits) = A (4.0)
Sum = (3×3.0) + (4×4.0) = 9 + 16 = 25  →  SGPA = 25 ÷ 7 = 3.57

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters

NUST CGPA to Percentage Formula

NUST uses a specific formula to convert CGPA to percentage — this is different from the standard HEC formula used by most other Pakistani universities:

Percentage = (CGPA × 25) − 12.5

Example: CGPA 3.20 → (3.20 × 25) − 12.5 = 80 − 12.5 = 67.5%

"This CGPA-to-percentage formula is unique to NUST. Do not use the standard HEC formula (CGPA × 10) for official documents, job applications, or graduate school admissions from NUST."

FAQ

NUST GPA & CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

NUST uses a 4.0 grading scale with letter grades from A (4.0) to F (0.0). Unlike many other Pakistani universities, NUST uses relative grading — your final letter grade depends on the performance distribution of your entire class, not just your absolute marks. The grade points are fixed: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0.
NUST uses a specific formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 25) − 12.5. For example, a CGPA of 3.20 gives (3.20 × 25) − 12.5 = 67.5%. This is different from the standard HEC formula used by most other Pakistani universities. Always use this formula for official documents, job applications, and graduate school admissions from NUST.
The minimum CGPA for graduation from most NUST undergraduate programs is 2.00 on the 4.0 scale. For BBA, BS Economics, BS Public Administration, BS Mass Communication, BS Accounting & Finance, and BS Psychology, the minimum is 2.50 CGPA. Students with CGPA below 2.00 face academic probation and risk suspension or withdrawal.
The Rector's List requires a semester GPA of 3.70 or above. The Dean's List requires a semester GPA of 3.50 or above. Both lists are based on semester GPA, not CGPA. To maintain consistent honors, you need to achieve these GPA thresholds each semester.
In NUST's relative grading system, your final letter grade is based on class performance distribution — specifically the class mean and standard deviation. If you score at the class average, you typically receive a C+ to B range. To secure an A, you generally need to be significantly above the class average. However, once the letter grade is assigned, the grade point value (e.g., A=4.0, B+=3.3) is fixed and the same for all NUST campuses.
NUST has a four-tier academic deficiency system: Warning → Probation → Suspension → Withdrawal. You are academically deficient if your semester GPA falls below 2.00, your CGPA falls below 2.00, you have an F or XF grade in any course, or you have an Incomplete (I) grade. First-semester students are protected from probation rules in their first semester unless they earn 5 or more F grades, which results in immediate withdrawal.
Yes. At NUST, if you fail a subject and repeat it, only one F is counted — even if you fail multiple times. This prevents repeated failures in a single course from rapidly accumulating toward the 7-F withdrawal threshold. Once you pass the repeated course, your CGPA improves as the passing grade replaces the failed grade in the calculation.
Yes — completely free. No sign-up, no account, no subscription. The calculator uses NUST's official grading scale and the university's specific CGPA-to-percentage formula. It works on all devices including mobile phones and tablets.
