QAU GPA & CGPA Calculator
Calculate your semester GPA and cumulative CGPA using Quaid-i-Azam University's official 4.0 absolute grading scale. Covers BS, MPhil and PhD standing rules, probation thresholds, and HEC percentage conversion. Free, instant, no sign-up.
QAU uses a 4.0 absolute grading scale with non-standard grade point values (e.g. A- = 3.80, B- = 2.80). Enter your courses, credit hours, and letter grades below.
Enter each completed semester's GPA and total credit hours. CGPA is the weighted average. Percentage is calculated using the standard HEC formula: CGPA × 25

QAU Official 4.0 Grading Scale (BS Programme)
Quaid-i-Azam University uses a 4.00 maximum GPA absolute grading system where your final percentage marks map directly to fixed letter grades and grade points. Importantly, QAU uses a non-standard grade point scale compared to most other Pakistani institutions — for instance, A- is 3.80 (not 3.67) and B- is 2.80 (not 2.67). Note that fractional marks are rounded to the nearest whole number before grading is applied.
| Mark Range | Letter Grade | Grade Points | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80% and above | A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| 76% – 79% | A- | 3.80 | Excellent |
| 72% – 75% | B+ | 3.50 | Very Good |
| 68% – 71% | B | 3.00 | Good |
| 64% – 67% | B- | 2.80 | Good |
| 60% – 63% | C+ | 2.50 | Average |
| 55% – 59% | C | 2.00 | Average |
| 50% – 54% | D | 1.00 | Pass (Minimum) |
| Below 50% | F | 0.00 | Fail |
QAU Non-Standard Grade Points: QAU's grade point values differ from most Pakistani universities. A- = 3.80, B+ = 3.50, and B- = 2.80. If you are comparing your QAU CGPA to another institution's scale, always account for these differences. Using a standard HEC scale for QAU will give you an incorrect GPA result.
Mark Distribution Formula
A single QAU course aggregates 100 marks distributed across three evaluation components:
| Component | Weightage | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Sessional Assessment | 20% – 25% | Homework, quizzes, class presentations, lab work |
| Mid-Semester Examination | 25% – 30% | Conducted around the 8th week of the semester |
| Terminal Examination | 50% | Final exam held at the end of the semester |
Semester GPA Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours
Example: Course 1 (3 Credits) = B+ (3.50) + Course 2 (3 Credits) = A (4.00)
Sum = (3×3.50) + (3×4.00) = 10.50 + 12.00 = 22.50 → SGPA = 22.50 ÷ 6 = 3.75
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters
QAU CGPA to Percentage Formula
QAU follows the standard HEC percentage conversion formula:
Percentage = CGPA × 25
Example: CGPA 3.00 → 3.00 × 25 = 75%
"QAU uses the standard HEC formula (CGPA × 25) for percentage conversion. Use this formula for all job applications, CSS/PMS forms, and graduate school admissions — not any university-specific formula."
QAU CGPA Requirements & Academic Progression Rules
QAU applies different academic standing rules for BS and postgraduate (MPhil/PhD) students. Understanding these thresholds helps you plan your studies and avoid probation or removal from the rolls.
BS Programme Academic Standing
| CGPA Range | Standing | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 3.50 – 4.00 | Excellent | Top performance — postgraduate scholarship eligibility |
| 2.00 – 3.49 | Good / Satisfactory | Meets BS progression requirements — continue improving |
| 1.00 – 1.99 | Academic Probation | Maximum 2 probation periods allowed — must reach 2.00+ |
| Below 1.00 | Dropped | Immediate removal from university roll — no grace period |
MPhil / PhD Academic Standing
| CGPA Range | Standing | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 2.50 – 4.00 | Good Standing | Eligible to proceed to research thesis phase |
| Below 2.50 | Ceased | Removed from MPhil/PhD programme — no probation allowed |
Course Improvement: QAU BS students who obtain a C or D grade in any course are eligible to repeat that course during the summer session to improve their CGPA. Only the improved grade is counted in the CGPA calculation after successful completion.
Mandatory Attendance: QAU requires a minimum of 80% attendance in all courses. Falling below this threshold makes you ineligible to sit in the terminal (final) examination, resulting in an automatic F grade regardless of your academic performance during the semester.
