IBA Grading System

IBA Karachi Official 4.0 Grading Scale

IBA Karachi uses a 4.0 absolute grading scale aligned with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan framework. Grades are assigned based on a student's absolute marks — 93% and above earns an A (4.00), regardless of class performance. Faculty also have the option of relative grading at their discretion.

PercentageLetter GradeGrade PointsPerformance
93% – 100%A4.00Excellent
87% – 92%A-3.67Outstanding
82% – 86%B+3.33Very Good
77% – 81%B3.00Good
72% – 76%B-2.67Above Average
68% – 71%C+2.33Average
64% – 67%C2.00Satisfactory
60% – 63%C-1.67Passing
Below 60%F0.00Fail

IBA Assessment Weightage: IBA Karachi heavily weights semester work at 60% — this includes midterm exams, quizzes, assignments, and projects. The final exam carries 40% of the total grade. Performing consistently throughout the semester is therefore critical to your letter grade, not just the final exam.

Semester GPA Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours

Example: Course 1 (3 Credits) = B+ (3.33) + Course 2 (3 Credits) = A (4.00)
Sum = (3×3.33) + (3×4.00) = 9.99 + 12.00 = 21.99  →  SGPA = 21.99 ÷ 6 = 3.665

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters

IBA Karachi CGPA to Percentage Formula

IBA Karachi follows the standard HEC percentage conversion formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 25

Example: CGPA 3.20 → 3.20 × 25 = 80%

"IBA Karachi uses the standard HEC formula (CGPA × 25) for percentage conversion — unlike NUST which uses its own university-specific formula. Always use this formula for job applications, graduate school admissions, and government service forms."

Academic Standing

IBA Karachi CGPA Requirements & Academic Policies

IBA Karachi maintains strict academic standards. Understanding the CGPA thresholds helps you plan your studies, avoid probation, and qualify for honours and awards.

CGPA RangeStandingWhat It Means

Below 2.00DismissalImmediate removal from institute rolls — no grace period

Graduation requirement: All IBA Karachi undergraduate (BBA/BS) and postgraduate (MBA/MS) students must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.20 for degree award. Students finishing their final semester with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.19 are allowed to repeat one semester of lowest academic standing to raise their CGPA before the degree is awarded.

Immediate dismissal: A CGPA falling below 2.00 at any point results in immediate removal from IBA rolls — there is no probation period below this threshold. Students may also be dismissed if their GPA in any single semester falls below 2.00, regardless of cumulative average. Contact the IBA Examinations Department immediately if you are at risk.

FAQ

IBA Karachi GPA & CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

IBA Karachi uses a 4.0 absolute grading scale aligned with the HEC Pakistan framework. Grades are assigned based on a student's absolute marks: A (93–100%) = 4.00, A- (87–92%) = 3.67, B+ (82–86%) = 3.33, B (77–81%) = 3.00, B- (72–76%) = 2.67, C+ (68–71%) = 2.33, C (64–67%) = 2.00, C- (60–63%) = 1.67, and F (below 60%) = 0.00. IBA does not use D grades — the minimum passing grade is C- (1.67). Faculty also have the option to apply relative grading at their discretion.
IBA Karachi uses the standard HEC formula: Percentage = CGPA × 25. For example, a CGPA of 3.20 gives 3.20 × 25 = 80%. This is the same standard formula used by most HEC-recognised Pakistani universities. It is different from NUST's university-specific formula (CGPA × 25 − 12.5). Always use CGPA × 25 for IBA transcripts, job applications, and graduate admissions.
All IBA Karachi undergraduate (BBA/BS) and postgraduate (MBA/MBA Executive/MS) students must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.20 for the award of their degree. If a student's CGPA in the final semester is between 2.00 and 2.19, they are allowed to repeat one semester of their lowest academic standing in order to raise their CGPA to 2.20 before the degree is awarded.
If your CGPA falls between 2.00 and 2.19 in any regular semester, IBA issues a formal warning letter and places you on academic probation for the following registered semester. You must raise your CGPA to 2.20 within that probation semester. If your CGPA falls below 2.00 at any point, IBA policy requires immediate dismissal from the institute rolls with no grace period or probation stage.
IBA Karachi's Dean's List requires a semester GPA of 3.67 or above (equivalent to an A- average). Students who achieve this level of performance consistently across semesters may also be eligible for medals and academic awards at graduation. There is no separate Rector's List at IBA — the Dean's List is the highest academic honour.
IBA Karachi allocates 60% of your final grade to semester work — which includes midterm exams, quizzes, assignments, and projects spread across the semester — and 40% to the final examination. This means strong continuous assessment performance throughout the semester has a greater impact on your letter grade than the final exam alone. Students who perform well in midterms and quizzes enter their final exam with a significant advantage.
IBA Karachi primarily uses absolute grading — your letter grade is determined by your actual marks against fixed percentage thresholds (93%+ = A, 87–92% = A-, etc.), regardless of how other students performed. However, IBA also allows faculty members to choose relative grading for their course, where the grade distribution depends on class performance. Your grade sheet will indicate whether a course used absolute or relative grading.
F grades are shown on IBA transcripts. However, once a student removes the deficiency by passing the course, the F grade is no longer counted in the CGPA calculation. This means repeating and passing a failed course improves your CGPA as the F is excluded from the cumulative average going forward. The initial CGPA for evening program students (PGD/MBA/MBA Executive/MS) is calculated on the basis of the first 6 courses taken.
