What Is the Difference Between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance for a single semester or term. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) measures your overall performance across all semesters of your degree program. Understanding the difference matters because scholarship applications, graduate school admissions, and job applications may ask for either or both.
| Feature | GPA | CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Single semester performance | All semesters combined |
| How calculated | Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Semester Credits | Σ (Semester GPA × Credits) ÷ Total Credits |
| Resets each term? | Yes — starts fresh each semester | No — accumulates over full degree |
| Used for | Scholarships, academic probation checks | Graduation, grad school, job applications |
| Can it change? | Every semester | Yes — each new semester updates it |
| Max value (US) | 4.0 (or 4.3 with A+) | 4.0 (or 4.3 with A+) |
"A single bad semester hurts your GPA temporarily but lowers your CGPA permanently — unless you compensate with stronger performance in future semesters. This is why early semesters matter more than students realise."
The GPA Formula
For a standard US 4.0 scale semester GPA:
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Example: Math A (4.0) × 4 credits + English B+ (3.3) × 3 credits + Science A- (3.7) × 4 credits = (16 + 9.9 + 14.8) ÷ 11 = GPA 3.70
The CGPA Formula
CGPA is the weighted average of all semester GPAs:
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits All Semesters
Example: Sem 1 GPA 3.5 × 15 credits + Sem 2 GPA 3.2 × 16 credits + Sem 3 GPA 3.8 × 15 credits = (52.5 + 51.2 + 57) ÷ 46 = CGPA 3.49
GPA & CGPA Grading Scales by Country
Different countries use different grading scales. Our calculator supports all major international systems. Here is a complete reference for the most common scales used by students worldwide.
US Standard 4.0 GPA Scale
| Letter Grade | Percentage | GPA Points | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 93–100% | 4.0 | Excellent |
| A- | 90–92% | 3.7 | Excellent |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 | Good |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 | Good |
| B- | 80–82% | 2.7 | Good |
| C+ / C | 70–79% | 2.0–2.3 | Average |
| D | 60–69% | 1.0 | Below Avg |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 | Failing |
Philippines GPA Scale (1.0 – 5.0)
Philippine universities use a 1.0 to 5.0 scale where 1.0 is the highest (Excellent) and 5.0 means failed. A grade of 3.0 is generally the minimum passing grade at most Philippine universities. This is the reverse of the US system — a lower number means a better grade.
| PH Grade | Equivalent % | Description | US GPA Equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 | 97–100% | Excellent | 4.0 |
| 1.25 | 94–96% | Excellent | 3.7 |
| 1.5 | 91–93% | Very Good | 3.3 |
| 1.75 | 88–90% | Very Good | 3.0 |
| 2.0 | 85–87% | Good | 2.7 |
| 2.5 | 80–84% | Satisfactory | 2.3 |
| 3.0 | 75–79% | Passing | 2.0 |
| 5.0 | Below 75% | Failed | 0.0 |
India / Pakistan 10-Point CGPA Scale
Many Indian universities (including those under UGC guidelines) and Pakistani universities use a 10-point CGPA system. Grade O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P (Pass) = 4, and F = 0. A CGPA of 7.0 or above (equivalent to roughly 70%) is considered good. To convert 10-point CGPA to a percentage, multiply by 9.5 (as per UGC formula: % = CGPA × 9.5).
Note for Pakistani students: The conversion formula varies by institution. Some universities use CGPA × 10 to estimate percentage, while others use CGPA × 9.5. Always check your institution's specific conversion policy for official documents.
Real GPA & CGPA Questions Students Ask
My CGPA dropped from 3.6 to 3.3 this semester. How many good semesters does it take to recover?
It depends on how many total credits you have accumulated. With 45 total credits at 3.3 CGPA, you need to score at least 4.0 GPA for one 15-credit semester to raise it to 3.49. To reach 3.5, you need approximately two consecutive 4.0 semesters. The math is unforgiving early in a degree but gets harder to move as total credits accumulate. Use the CGPA tab above to model exactly how many semesters it takes in your specific situation.
What GPA do I need to get into graduate school?
Most US graduate programs require a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (B average). Competitive programs at top universities typically expect 3.5 or above. Medical and law schools generally want 3.7+. International students should note that a 3.0 US GPA is roughly equivalent to a UK Upper Second (2:1), a Philippine GPA of 2.0, or an Indian CGPA of about 7.0 on the 10-point scale.
How much does one failing grade affect my GPA?
A single F (0.0) in a 3-credit course, when you are carrying 15 total credits in the semester, contributes 0 grade points instead of the 9–12 you would have earned with an A or B. This typically drops your semester GPA by 0.7 to 1.0 points. On your CGPA, if you have 60 total credits and fail one 3-credit course, your CGPA drops by approximately 0.15 to 0.20 points. Retaking and passing the course can help, but the original F may still appear on your transcript depending on your institution's policy.
How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage for job applications?
Conversion formulas vary by country and institution. Common methods: US 4.0 scale — multiply by 25 (CGPA 3.5 = 87.5%). Indian 10-point scale — multiply by 9.5 (CGPA 8.0 = 76%). Pakistani universities — multiply by 9.5 or 10 depending on institution policy. Philippine scale — convert directly using the grade equivalency table above. Always check your university's official conversion chart for documentation purposes.
Key insight: Your CGPA is not fixed. Every new semester is a fresh opportunity to raise it — especially early in your degree when fewer credits are accumulated. A 4.0 semester at the start of year 1 carries more CGPA weight than the same performance in year 4.
