Ohio State University Official 4.0 Grading Scale
The Ohio State University uses a standard letter-based 4.0 GPA system with two important distinctions: there is no A+ grade (the maximum is A at 4.0) and the failing grade is designated E rather than F, consistent with OSU's historical grading conventions. Additionally, OSU does not use the grades of D–, making the scale run from A (4.0) at the top to E (0.0) at the bottom with 11 grade levels total.
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's credit hours by the point value of the earned grade, summing across all courses, and dividing by the total graded credit hours. Non-letter marks do not enter this calculation.

No A+ and no D– at Ohio State: OSU's scale intentionally omits both the A+ and D– grades. The highest grade is A (4.0) — there is no grade above it. At the lower end, after D+ (1.3) and D (1.0), the next grade is E (0.0) — failing. If you are accustomed to a scale that includes D–, note that OSU students who would receive a D– elsewhere will receive an E (0.0) at Ohio State.

Withdrawal — student officially dropped the course within the permitted deadline. Appears on transcript with no grade points. Does not affect GPA.
I
Incomplete — student was passing but could not complete requirements due to extenuating circumstances. Converts to a letter grade once requirements are met.
EN / NEN
Unearned E — assigned when a student stops attending or never attended. Treated as E (0.0) for academic standing purposes but designated separately on transcripts.
PA / NP
Pass / No Pass — used in pass/fail graded courses. Carries no grade points and does not affect GPA either positively or negatively.
S / U
Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory — alternative pass/fail designations. Like PA/NP, these do not factor into GPA calculations.
EM
Examination Credit — credit earned through examination rather than coursework. Carries no letter grade and does not affect GPA.
K
Transfer Credit — credits transferred from another institution. Applied toward degree requirements but not included in the OSU GPA calculation.
