The University of Michigan uses a 4.0 Honor Point scale for all undergraduate and graduate students. Your GPA is calculated by dividing total Michigan Honor Points (MHP) earned by the total number of credit hours elected. E Not F — Michigan Uses E as the Failing Grade: Like Harvard, the University of Michigan uses the letter E (not F) to denote a failing grade. A grade of E earns 0.0 honor points and no credit hours are awarded. This is a longstanding academic convention at Michigan. When entering grades, always select E for a failed course — there is no F grade in Michigan's system.

GPA = Total Michigan Honor Points (MHP) ÷ Total Credit Hours Elected
Example: A B grade (3.0 honor points) in a 4-credit course = 12 MHP. An A- (3.7) in a 3-credit course = 11.1 MHP. Total MHP (23.1) ÷ Total Credits (7) = GPA 3.30

Pass/Fail and Special Grade Options
U of M students are typically permitted to take a limited number of non-major courses on a Pass/Fail (or Credit/No Credit) basis. Pass/Fail credits count toward graduation but are not included in the GPA calculation. Students should consult their academic advisor for college-specific rules on the number of P/F courses allowed per term or degree.

College of Engineering — Grade Variations
The College of Engineering (CoE) at U of M generally does not use the A+ or D- grades. Engineering students receive grades from A down to D, with E as the failing grade. If you are a CoE student, simply skip A+ and D- when entering your grades — they are not available in your college's grading system.
