UMN Grading System

University of Minnesota A-F Grading Scale

The University of Minnesota uses a standardized plus/minus grading scale. The university does not award GPA points for an A+ grade. Percentage cutoffs are set by individual instructors and are usually explained in each course syllabus.

UMN GPA Formula

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total GPA Credits

S/N, Incomplete, Withdrawal, and Audit Symbols

S means Satisfactory and is awarded for S/N grading when performance is equivalent to C- or better. N means No Credit and gives no earned credit. I means Incomplete and is a temporary symbol used for extraordinary documented circumstances. W means Withdrawal. V means Visitor or Audit. These symbols do not positively or negatively affect cumulative GPA.

Important UMN GPA Policies

Undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota cannot take more than 25% of total credits on the S/N basis. Major-specific courses usually require A-F grading unless the academic department states otherwise.

If you repeat a course, both attempts remain visible on your transcript, but only the latest grade is used in cumulative GPA calculation, even if the second grade is lower.

Final grades are typically submitted and visible in the MyU Portal Academics tab within 4 business days after the term ends.
