The Quarter Grade Formula
For equal-weight quarters (the most common system):
Final Grade = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ÷ 4
When a final exam is included (the most common US high school setup):
Final Grade = (Q1×20% + Q2×20% + Q3×20% + Q4×20%) + Final Exam×20%
Example: Q1=85, Q2=78, Q3=91, Q4=88, Final Exam=82 → (85+78+91+88)×0.20 + 82×0.20 = 84.4+16.4 = 84.8% (B).

Can a Bad Quarter Ruin Your Final Grade?
This is the question most students come here with — especially after a rough Q2 or Q3. The short answer is: one bad quarter hurts, but it does not have to be fatal. Here is the math, which is exactly what our calculator uses behind the scenes.
Scenario 1 — You failed Q2 (55%). Can you still pass?
If you score 75%, 80%, and 78% in Q1, Q3, and Q4 respectively: Final = (75 + 55 + 80 + 78) ÷ 4 = 72% — a C grade. Yes, you can still pass — and comfortably.
Scenario 2 — You are currently at Q3 with 68% average. What do you need in Q4?
Your current 3-quarter average: (Q1 + Q2 + Q3) ÷ 3. To reach a 70% final: you need Q4 = (70 × 4) − (Q1 + Q2 + Q3). If your 3-quarter average is 68%, you need: (280 − 204) = 76% in Q4 to pass with a C. Tough but achievable with focused effort.
Scenario 3 — Final exam included. Does it change things significantly?
Yes — significantly. If the final exam counts 20% and you are averaging 68% across four quarters, a strong 90% final exam result changes your grade to: (68×80%) + (90×20%) = 54.4 + 18 = 72.4% — a C.
