University of the Punjab Official 4.0 Grading Scale
The University of the Punjab (PU) evaluates student performance using a 4.00-scale semester grading system based on letter grades and fixed percentage thresholds. PU applies an upward rounding rule — any fractional mark is rounded up to the next full integer (e.g., 64.1% becomes 65%). Certain specialised departments such as PUCIT may follow the standard HEC 12-grade scale instead.
| Percentage Range | Letter Grade | Grade Points (GP) | Division |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85% – 100% | A+ / A | 4.00 | First Division (Distinction) |
| 80% – 84% | A- | 3.70 | First Division |
| 75% – 79% | B+ | 3.30 | First Division |
| 70% – 74% | B | 3.00 | First Division |
| 65% – 69% | B- | 2.70 | Second Division |
| 61% – 64% | C+ | 2.30 | Second Division |
| 58% – 60% | C | 2.00 | Second Division |
| 55% – 57% | C- | 1.70 | Third Division |
| 50% – 54% | D | 1.00 | Third Division |
| Below 50% | F | 0.00 | Fail |
PU Upward Rounding Rule: Any fractional mark obtained in a course is automatically rounded up to the next full integer. For example, 64.1%, 64.5%, and 64.9% all become 65% — which falls in the B- range (2.70 GP), not the C+ range. Always apply this rule before determining your letter grade from raw marks.
Semester GPA Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours
Example: Computing (3 Credits) = A (4.0) + English (3 Credits) = B+ (3.3) + Stats (3 Credits) = B (3.0)
Sum = (3×4.0) + (3×3.3) + (3×3.0) = 12 + 9.9 + 9 = 30.9 → SGPA = 30.9 ÷ 9 = 3.43
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters
PU CGPA to Percentage Formula
PU uses a straightforward multiplier formula to convert CGPA to an official percentage:
Percentage = CGPA × 25
Examples: CGPA 3.00 → 3.00 × 25 = 75.0% (First Division) | CGPA 3.60 → 3.60 × 25 = 90.0% (Distinction) | CGPA 2.40 → 2.40 × 25 = 60.0% (Second Division)
"PU's CGPA × 25 formula is the official conversion standard used for transcripts, job applications, and graduate admissions. Do not use the HEC standard formula or any other multiplier when reporting your PU percentage in official documents."
Punjab University CGPA Requirements & Academic Standing
Understanding your CGPA and division at PU helps you plan your academic goals, avoid probation, and meet the graduation requirements of your specific program.
| CGPA Range | % Equivalent | Division / Standing | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.40 – 4.00 | 85% – 100% | First Division (Distinction) | Top academic tier — scholarship and honours eligibility |
| 3.00 – 3.39 | 75% – 84% | First Division | Strong academic performance |
| 2.40 – 2.99 | 60% – 74% | Second Division | Acceptable — aim for First Division each semester |
| 2.00 – 2.39 | 50% – 59% | Third Division | Meets minimum graduation requirement — borderline |
| 1.70 – 1.99 | 42.5% – 49% | Academic Probation | Probation — must improve or face removal |
| Below 1.70 | Below 42.5% | Removal Risk | Risk of removal from university rolls |
Graduation requirements: PU requires a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for 4-year Bachelor's and 2-year Associate degrees. For MS / M.Phil programs, the minimum CGPA required is 2.50. Students with CGPA between 1.70 and 1.99 are placed on academic probation. Failure to raise the CGPA above 2.00 after two consecutive probation semesters results in removal from the university rolls.
