NUML Official 4.0 Grading Scales
NUML University operates on an absolute, 4.0 GPA-based grading system where a minimum of 50% marks is required to pass any subject. NUML uses two different grading structures — one for undergraduate/general programmes and a more granular scale for MPhil and postgraduate programmes.
Undergraduate / General Grading Scale
| Percentage | Letter Grade | Grade Points | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90% and above | A+ | 4.00 | Outstanding |
| 80% – 89.99% | A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| 70% – 79.99% | B | 3.00 | Good |
| 60% – 69.99% | C | 2.00 | Satisfactory |
| 50% – 59.99% | D | 1.00 | Pass (Minimum) |
| Below 50% | F | 0.00 | Fail |
MPhil / Postgraduate Grading Scale
The MPhil programme uses a more granular 6-level grading structure with plus (+) grades for finer academic differentiation:
| Percentage | Letter Grade | Grade Points | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90% and above | A+ | 4.00 | Outstanding |
| 80% – 89.99% | A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| 75% – 79.99% | B+ | 3.75 | Very Good |
| 70% – 74.99% | B | 3.25 | Good |
| 65% – 69.99% | C+ | 2.75 | Satisfactory |
| 60% – 64.99% | C | 2.25 | Satisfactory |
| Below 50% | F | 0.00 | Fail |
A+ and A carry the same grade points (4.00): At NUML, both A+ (90%+) and A (80–89.99%) are awarded 4.00 grade points. The distinction between them is one of academic recognition and transcript notation, not GPA calculation. Achieving an A+ represents exceptional performance but does not mathematically benefit your GPA over an A.
Mark Distribution
NUML typically distributes marks as 40% for midterm and 60% for the end-semester examination, though the exact split may vary by programme and department. Marks of 0.5 or above are rounded up to the nearest whole number before grade assignment.
Semester GPA Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours
Example: Course 1 (3 Credits) = A (4.00) + Course 2 (3 Credits) = B (3.00)
Sum = (3×4.00) + (3×3.00) = 12 + 9 = 21 → SGPA = 21 ÷ 6 = 3.50
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters
NUML CGPA to Percentage Formula
NUML follows the standard HEC percentage conversion formula:
Percentage = CGPA × 25
Example: CGPA 3.00 → 3.00 × 25 = 75%
"NUML follows the standard HEC percentage formula (CGPA × 25). Use this for CSS/PMS forms, job applications, and graduate school admissions — the same formula applies at most HEC-recognised Pakistani universities."
NUML Academic Rules & Grade Improvement Policy
NUML University maintains an absolute grading system with clear rules for passing, grade improvement, and minimum standing requirements.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum Pass Mark | 50% in each subject (D grade = 1.00) — below 50% is an automatic F |
| Rounding Off | Marks of 0.5 or above are rounded up to the nearest whole number before grading |
| Mark Distribution (General) | 40% midterm + 60% end-semester exam (may vary by programme) |
| Grade Improvement | Students with D or F grades can repeat courses to improve GPA |
| A+ vs A | Both carry 4.00 grade points — A+ is for 90%+, A is for 80–89.99% |
Grade Improvement Opportunity: NUML allows students who receive a D or F grade to repeat those courses in a later semester or summer session to improve their GPA. Once the repeated course is passed, the improved grade replaces the old one in the CGPA calculation. Take advantage of this policy early — repeating courses in later years when credit load is higher becomes much more difficult.
Programme-Specific Rules: Grading structures and mark distributions may vary by department and programme at NUML. Always verify the current rules with your department's student handbook or the official NUML Examination Rules for the most accurate information applicable to your specific programme.
