How to Use the Quarter Grade Calculator

Most students panic at the end of Q3 or Q4 wondering "is my grade still recoverable?" Our Quarter Grade Calculator answers that instantly. Enter what you have, see exactly where you stand, and plan what you need to do next quarter.

1
Enter Your Quarter Grades
Type your percentage score for each quarter you have completed (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4). Leave blank any quarters not yet completed — the calculator adjusts automatically.
2
Choose Equal or Custom Weights
Most schools give each quarter equal weight (25% each). If your school uses a different weighting system — for example Q3 and Q4 count more — switch to Custom Weights and set your own percentages.
3
Add Final Exam (Optional)
If your school includes a final exam in the final grade, tick "Include Final Exam" and enter your score and the exam's weight percentage. The calculator adjusts quarter weights automatically.
4
See Your Final Grade Instantly
Your final grade average, letter grade, and GPA appear with a full breakdown — best quarter, weakest quarter, pass/fail status, and a personalised tip on what to focus on next.
About This Tool

What Is a Quarter Grade Calculator — and Why Do You Need One?

A quarter grade calculator combines your scores from all four marking periods — Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 — into a single final grade average. It solves one of the most common problems students face: not knowing exactly how a bad quarter affected their final grade, or whether a strong Q4 can still save them.

The answer is almost always yes — but only if you know the numbers. That is exactly what this calculator gives you: clarity. Enter your four quarter grades (and final exam if required), and see your final average, letter grade, and GPA in one second.

Common student mistake: Many students assume one failing quarter means they failed the year. That is not always true. A 55% in Q2 followed by 85%, 88%, and 90% in the other three quarters still results in a 79.5% (C+) — a passing grade. Always calculate before assuming the worst.

The Quarter Grade Formula

For equal-weight quarters (the most common system):

Final Grade = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ÷ 4

When a final exam is included (the most common US high school setup):

Final Grade = (Q1×20% + Q2×20% + Q3×20% + Q4×20%) + Final Exam×20%

Example: Q1=85, Q2=78, Q3=91, Q4=88, Final Exam=82 → (85+78+91+88)×0.20 + 82×0.20 = 84.4+16.4 = 84.8% (B).

"The quarter system gives students 4 separate chances to impact their final grade — each quarter is an opportunity to pull the average up, not a permanent verdict."

Can a Bad Quarter Ruin Your Final Grade?

This is the question most students come here with — especially after a rough Q2 or Q3. The short answer is: one bad quarter hurts, but it does not have to be fatal. Here is the math, which is exactly what our calculator uses behind the scenes.

Scenario 1 — You failed Q2 (55%). Can you still pass?

If you score 75%, 80%, and 78% in Q1, Q3, and Q4 respectively: Final = (75 + 55 + 80 + 78) ÷ 4 = 72% — a C grade. Yes, you can still pass — and comfortably.

Scenario 2 — You are currently at Q3 with 68% average. What do you need in Q4?

Your current 3-quarter average: (Q1 + Q2 + Q3) ÷ 3. To reach a 70% final: you need Q4 = (70 × 4) − (Q1 + Q2 + Q3). If your 3-quarter average is 68%, you need: (280 − 204) = 76% in Q4 to pass with a C. Tough but achievable with focused effort.

Scenario 3 — Final exam included. Does it change things significantly?

Yes — significantly. If the final exam counts 20% and you are averaging 68% across four quarters, a strong 90% final exam result changes your grade to: (68×80%) + (90×20%) = 54.4 + 18 = 72.4% — a C. The final exam is your last chance to rescue your grade. Use our Final Grade Calculator to find the exact score you need.

"The final exam is often the most powerful single grade boost available to struggling students — because it carries a large weight and comes after all the learning has happened."

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A quarter grade is typically the average of all assignments, tests, and quizzes within that marking period. Your final year grade is then the average of all four quarter grades — sometimes combined with a final exam. The formula is: Final Grade = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ÷ 4, or adjusted if a final exam is included.
No — in most schools the final exam is a separate component that adds to the final grade calculation. The most common setup gives each quarter 20% weight and the final exam 20%, totalling 100%. Some schools allow the final exam to replace a student's lowest quarter grade — check with your teacher for your school's specific policy.
Yes — in most cases. One failing quarter (below 60%) does not automatically mean you fail the year. If you score well in the other three quarters, your final average can still be above the passing mark. For example: Q1=55%, Q2=80%, Q3=82%, Q4=85% gives a final average of 75.5% — a passing C grade. Use our calculator to check your specific situation.
Use this formula: Required Q4 = (Passing Grade × 4) − Q1 − Q2 − Q3. Example: To pass at 70%, with Q1=65, Q2=68, Q3=72: Required Q4 = (70×4) − 65 − 68 − 72 = 280 − 205 = 75. You need a 75% in Q4 to reach a 70% final average.
No. Most schools use equal 25% weight per quarter, but some schools give Q3 and Q4 more weight to reflect the difficulty of later material. Some schools weight Q1 and Q2 as 20% each, with Q3, Q4, and the final exam at 20% each. Switch to Custom Weights in our calculator to match your school's exact system.
A quarter covers roughly 9–10 weeks (one-fourth of the school year). A semester covers 18 weeks (half the year). Schools that use quarters have 4 marking periods per year. Schools that use semesters have 2. If your school runs on semesters, use our Semester Grade Calculator instead.
