Penn State Alternative Transcript Symbols
Penn State also uses special transcript symbols that do not carry GPA weight. These symbols are excluded from GPA calculations because they do not represent quality letter grades.

Penn State does not use an Incomplete I grade designation. Instead, DF is used when an instructor allows extra time to complete remaining coursework.
How Penn State GPA Is Calculated
Penn State GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade into grade points, multiplying those points by the course credit hours, and dividing the total quality points by total GPA credits attempted.

Penn State Academic Standing Rules
Undergraduate Students: Penn State undergraduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 to remain in good academic standing.
Graduate Students: Graduate degree programs require a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher to graduate. For graduate students, D and F grades are considered failing, and courses with a D grade usually must be repeated.
