Michigan State University Numerical Grading Scale

Michigan State University uses a stepped numerical grading scale from 0.0 to 4.0. Grades are assigned in 0.5 increments and used to calculate honor points for GPA.

MSU GradeMeaningGPA ValueStatus

3.0Good3.0Counts in GPA
2.5Above Average / Satisfactory2.5Counts in GPA

MSU GPA Note: GPA is calculated by dividing total honor points by total credits attempted. Example: a 3.5 grade in a 4-credit course gives 14 honor points.

MSU GPA Formula

GPA = Total Honor Points ÷ Total Credits Attempted

Example: If you earn 3.5 in a 4-credit course, honor points = 3.5 × 4 = 14 honor points.

CR-NC, P-N, and Temporary Grades

MSU also uses supplemental grading systems. CR-NC allows certain undergraduate elective courses to avoid GPA impact. CR usually means performance at a 2.0 level or higher, while NC means below that level. P-N courses may be offered strictly as Pass-No Grade. I means Incomplete and is a temporary grade for documented, unexpected situations.

"For MSU GPA calculation, use only numerical GPA grades and attempted credits. Supplemental marks like CR, NC, P, N, and I should not be treated as normal GPA points."
