Yale University Official Grading Scale (Yale College)
Yale College uses a traditional letter grading system on a 4.0 scale. Unlike many US universities, Yale does not award an A+ grade — the highest possible grade is A (4.00). Instructors recognize exemplary work above an A via an End-of-Term Report rather than a higher grade point.
| Letter Grade | Grade Points | Percentage Range | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | 93% – 100% | Excellent |
| A- | 3.67 | 90% – 92% | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.33 | 87% – 89% | Good |
| B | 3.00 | 83% – 86% | Good |
| B- | 2.67 | 80% – 82% | Good |
| C+ | 2.33 | 77% – 79% | Satisfactory |
| C | 2.00 | 73% – 76% | Satisfactory |
| C- | 1.67 | 70% – 72% | Satisfactory |
| D+ | 1.33 | 67% – 69% | Passing |
| D | 1.00 | 63% – 66% | Passing |
| D- | 0.67 | 60% – 62% | Minimum Pass |
| F | 0.00 | Below 60% | Failing |
No A+ at Yale: Yale College instructors cannot award an A+ grade. The maximum grade point is A = 4.00. Exceptional work above the A threshold is acknowledged separately through an End-of-Term Report submitted to the student's residential college dean.
Semester GPA Formula
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Letter-Graded Credit Hours
Example: Introduction to Economics A- (3.67) × 1cr + Statistics B+ (3.33) × 1cr = (3.67 + 3.33) ÷ 2 = GPA 3.50
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Letter-Graded Credits) ÷ Total Credits All Semesters
Credit/D/Fail Option
Yale undergraduates may take a limited number of courses on a Credit/D/Fail basis. Under this option, grades of A through C- are converted to CR (Credit) on the transcript and do not affect GPA. Grades of D+, D, D-, and F are recorded as earned and do appear on the transcript. Students should use this option strategically and confirm with their residential college dean.
"Yale's Credit/D/Fail option allows students to explore courses outside their comfort zone without GPA risk — but only grades of D+ and below (and F) appear on the transcript. CR grades carry credits toward graduation but are invisible to GPA calculations."
Graduate & Professional Schools
Yale's professional schools use different grading systems than Yale College. Yale Law School uses Honors (H), Pass (P), Low Pass (LP), and Fail (F). Yale School of Management uses High Honors (HH), Honors (H), Proficient (PR), Pass (P), and Fail (F). Yale School of Nursing and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences use Honors (H), High Pass (HP), Pass (P), and Fail (F). This calculator applies only to Yale College undergraduates.
Yale GPA Requirements & Academic Standing
Yale College students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. Understanding your GPA helps you stay on track with Yale's standing requirements and work toward recognition such as Dean's List eligibility.
| CGPA Range | Standing | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 3.80 – 4.00 | Dean's List Eligible | Top academic performance — eligible for Dean's List recognition |
| 3.50 – 3.79 | High Distinction | Excellent standing — strong graduate school / employment profile |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | Good Standing | Meeting Yale College academic standards |
| 2.00 – 2.99 | Satisfactory | Meets minimum — improvement recommended |
| Below 2.00 | Academic Warning | Below minimum — risk of academic review |
Yale Academic Standing: Yale College requires students to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA for continued enrollment. Students who fall below satisfactory standing are reviewed by the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing (CHAS). Yale does not publish a single universal Dean's List cutoff — recognition varies by residential college and term.
Graduate School Note: Yale Law School, Yale SOM, Yale School of Nursing, and other professional schools use entirely different grading scales (Honors/Pass/Fail systems). This GPA calculator applies only to Yale College undergraduate students using the 4.0 letter grade scale.
