UT Law School Exception: The UT School of Law uses a different grading scale that allows an A+ valued at 4.30 grade points — above the standard 4.0 maximum used by all other UT Austin colleges and schools. This GPA calculator is configured for standard UT Austin undergraduate and graduate programs, not the Law School.
Semester GPA Formula
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Letter-Graded Credit Hours
Example: Intro to Economics A- (3.67) × 3cr + Statistics B+ (3.33) × 3cr = (11.01 + 9.99) ÷ 6 = GPA 3.50
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Letter-Graded Credits) ÷ Total Credits All Semesters
Special Academic Symbols — Excluded from GPA
The following UT Austin transcript designations do not earn grade points and are completely excluded from GPA calculations: CR (Credit — pass/fail courses), NC (No Credit — pass/fail courses), Q (Dropped without academic penalty), W (Official withdrawal from university), X (Temporary incomplete/extension approved by instructor), and I (Permanent incomplete status).
"At UT Austin, undergraduates must earn at least a D- to receive course credit, though many major-specific requirements demand a C- or higher. Graduate School guidelines require a minimum C for any course to count toward a graduate degree Program of Work — a C- does not meet graduate credit standards."
UT Austin GPA Requirements & Academic Standing
The University of Texas at Austin monitors both semester and cumulative GPA to determine undergraduate and graduate academic standing. Maintaining good standing is required for continued enrollment, financial aid, and scholarship eligibility.
| CGPA Range | Standing | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 3.50 – 4.00 | Dean's Honor List Eligible | Top semester GPA recognition — awarded per term |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | Good Standing (Graduate) | Meets graduate minimum — C or higher per course required |
| 2.00 – 2.99 | Good Standing (Undergrad) | Meets undergraduate minimum — satisfactory progress |
| Below 2.00 (UG) | Academic Probation | Below minimum — risk of academic suspension |
| Below 3.00 (Grad) | Graduate Probation | Below graduate minimum — program continuation at risk |
UT Austin Dean's Honor List: Undergraduate students may be recognized on the Dean's Honor List within their college based on outstanding semester GPA performance, typically requiring a 3.50 or higher with a full course load. Specific cutoffs vary by college — check with your dean's office for exact requirements.
Graduate Credit Minimum: UT Graduate School requires students to earn a minimum grade of C in each course for it to count toward their Program of Work. A C- (1.67) does not satisfy graduate credit requirements. Graduate students must also maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for good standing.
