Harvard Grade Inflation (2026): Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences has proposed a 20% cap on A-range grades to address grade inflation — though implementation has been delayed by one year. Currently, A-range grades remain very common. The average Harvard undergraduate GPA is approximately 3.80, which is among the highest of any major US university.

Pass/Fail and Special Grades
Harvard FAS offers Pass/Fail (PA/FL) grading — generally one course per semester with instructor permission. PA/FL grades are not included in your GPA calculation. Of Harvard's 128 required degree credits, at least 84 must be letter-graded. Starting with the Class of 2029, all four required General Education courses must also be letter-graded.

Important: Harvard Latin honors are not awarded purely on CGPA. Cum Laude and above also require a high-quality senior thesis and, in many concentrations, a department recommendation. A strong CGPA is necessary but not always sufficient — however, it is the single most important factor.
Harvard Business School grading is different: HBS uses a unique 1–4 scale where 1 is the highest grade and 4 is a failing grade resulting in expulsion. The GPA calculator above applies only to Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) undergraduate programs, not HBS or other graduate schools.
