How to Use
How to Use the UMT GPA & CGPA Calculator
This calculator is built specifically for University of Management and Technology (UMT) students. UMT uses a relative grading system — your final letter grade depends on your rank within the class, not just your raw score. Once your letter grades are confirmed via the UMT Office of Controller of Examinations portal, enter them here for an instant, accurate result.
1
Select Semester GPA or CGPA Tab
The Semester GPA tab calculates your GPA for a single semester using your awarded letter grades and credit hours. The CGPA tab combines multiple semesters into your cumulative average — it also flags dismissal risk zones specific to your program level (BS, MS, or PhD).
2
Enter Your Courses and Awarded Letter Grades
Type each course name, select the letter grade awarded by UMT (from A+ down to F), and enter the credit hours. Since UMT uses relative grading, always use the grade shown on your official result card — not an estimate based on raw marks. Click "+ Add Course" to add more rows.
3
Get Your Instant GPA and CGPA
Results appear immediately with a full course breakdown. The formula is: GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. Each course's contribution is shown in the visual progress breakdown below your result.
4
Check Academic Standing and Dismissal Risk
Your result clearly shows whether you are in Good Standing, approaching a dismissal threshold (2.25 for MS/M.Phil, 3.00 for PhD), or at risk. UMT's multi-level dismissal rules differ by program — the calculator flags the correct warning based on your CGPA. A personalised improvement tip is included with every result.
UMT Grading System
UMT Official 4.0 Relative Grading Scale
UMT evaluates participants on a 4.00 GPA scale using a relative grading system. Unlike absolute grading (where a fixed percentage always earns the same grade), UMT's relative system assigns letter grades based on each participant's standing within their class cohort. A student scoring 75% in a high-performing class may receive a lower letter grade than someone scoring 75% in a class with a lower overall average.
This approach is designed to reward consistent performance above the class average and to distinguish top performers across programs at all levels — Bachelor's, Master's, M.Phil, MS, and PhD.

Relative Grading — Why Your Raw Marks Are Not Enough: At UMT, your final letter grade is determined by your relative rank within the class, not by crossing a fixed percentage threshold. Two students scoring 72% in the same course may receive different letter grades depending on the overall class distribution. Always use your officially awarded grade from the UMT Controller of Examinations portal — never estimate from raw marks alone.
Example: Business Communication (3 Credits) = A (4.0) + Management (3 Credits) = B+ (3.3) + Accounting (3 Credits) = B (3.0) Sum = (3×4.0) + (3×3.3) + (3×3.0) = 12 + 9.9 + 9 = 30.9 → SGPA = 30.9 ÷ 9 = 3.43
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters
"UMT's relative grading system is one of the key differences that sets it apart from most Pakistani universities. Your grade reflects not just what you scored — but where you stood in your class. Consistent performance above the average is the most reliable path to a high GPA at UMT."
Passing Requirements
UMT Minimum Passing Marks by Program Level
UMT enforces different minimum passing marks depending on your level of study. Falling below these thresholds in an individual course results in an F grade and zero grade points for that course — directly impacting your CGPA.
Bachelor's
50%
Minimum marks required to pass any individual course at undergraduate level
Master's / MS / M.Phil
60%
Higher threshold for all postgraduate taught programs — same raw score as BS is not enough
PhD
60%
PhD participants must also clear 60% per course and maintain a CGPA above 3.00
Important: Passing an individual course (clearing the 50% or 60% threshold) does not automatically mean you are in Good Standing. Your cumulative CGPA across all semesters must also meet the graduation minimum of 2.00 — and for graduate participants, must stay above program-specific dismissal floors.
Academic Standing
UMT CGPA Requirements, Standing & Dismissal Rules
UMT's academic standing system has multiple tiers, and the consequences of a low CGPA differ significantly depending on whether you are an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral student. Understanding these thresholds is essential — especially for graduate participants where dismissal rules are stricter.
CGPA Range

3.70 – 4.00

3.30 – 3.69

3.00 – 3.29

Good Standing
PhD safe floor — BS and MS also in good standing
2.25 – 2.99
BS / MS / M.Phil
Satisfactory

2.00 – 2.24
BS / MS / M.Phil
Warning Zone
MS/M.Phil dismissal risk if below 2.25 for two consecutive semesters
Graduation requirement: A minimum CGPA of 2.00 is required for graduation from all UMT undergraduate and graduate programs. For MS, M.Phil, and Master's participants — a CGPA below 2.25 for two consecutive semesters triggers a dismissal review. For PhD participants — a CGPA below 3.00 for two consecutive semesters triggers a dismissal review. These are rolling semester-by-semester checks, not just a final graduation screen.
UMT Dismissal Rules — Explained Simply
The dismissal system at UMT is consecutive-semester based, not a single-semester fail. This means a single bad semester does not automatically result in dismissal — but two consecutive semesters below your program's threshold will trigger a formal dismissal review. The thresholds are:
Program
Dismissal Trigger
Condition
Master's / MS / M.Phil
CGPA below 2.25
For two consecutive semesters
PhD
CGPA below 3.00
For two consecutive semesters
All Programs
CGPA below 2.00
Fails minimum graduation requirement
PhD students take note: A CGPA of 3.00 is not just a "good" score at UMT — it is the mandatory minimum floor for PhD participants. Maintaining a B average or above in every course is essential for PhD students to remain in the program. One semester of C+ grades can drop the CGPA below 3.00 quickly given the smaller credit volume of PhD coursework.
Pakistani University Calculators
GPA Calculators for Other Pakistani Universities
Each Pakistani university has its own grading scale and rules. Always use the correct calculator for your institution to get an accurate result.
UMT uses a relative grading system on a 4.00 GPA scale. Letter grades are assigned based on a participant's relative ranking within their class, not fixed percentage cutoffs. The grade points are: A+/A = 4.00, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, F = 0.00. There is no D grade at UMT — C (2.00) is the lowest passing grade point above F.
Minimum passing marks differ by program level at UMT. Bachelor's students must score at least 50% in each course. Master's, MS, M.Phil, and PhD students must score at least 60% in each course. Falling below these thresholds results in an F grade regardless of the class distribution, since relative grading is applied only above the minimum passing floor.
UMT requires a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for graduation from all undergraduate and graduate programs. This is a cumulative requirement — a student may pass individual semesters but still fail to graduate if their overall CGPA remains below 2.00 at the time of degree completion.
UMT may dismiss Master's, MS, and M.Phil participants whose CGPA falls below 2.25 for two consecutive semesters. This is a rolling check — it is not based on the final CGPA alone, but on two back-to-back semesters falling below the 2.25 threshold. One semester below 2.25 is a warning; two consecutive semesters triggers a formal dismissal review.
PhD students at UMT must maintain a CGPA of 3.00 or above. If the CGPA drops below 3.00 for two consecutive semesters, the student faces a dismissal review. This means a single B grade average is not sufficient for PhD students — consistent performance of B or above in all courses is required to stay safely above the 3.00 floor.
In absolute grading, a fixed percentage (e.g., 85%) always earns the same letter grade (e.g., A) regardless of class performance. In UMT's relative grading system, letter grades are assigned based on each student's rank within the class distribution. The same raw score can result in different letter grades depending on how the entire class performed. This means you cannot calculate your UMT GPA from raw marks — always use your officially awarded letter grade from the Controller of Examinations portal.
You can review your official grades and result cards through the UMT Office of Controller of Examinations portal. Always use the awarded letter grades from this official source when entering data into this calculator — not estimates based on raw marks or internal assessments, as the relative grading adjustment happens at the university system level after final results are processed.
