GCU Lahore Official Grading Scale — Post Fall 2021
GC University Lahore transitioned from a 22-year-old relative grading system to a rubric-based absolute marking system starting Fall 2021. Under the new system, your letter grade is determined by your actual marks and rubric performance — not by how you rank against classmates. GCU now uses the standard HEC-approved 4.0 absolute grading scale.
| Letter Grade | Grade Points | Percentage Range | Standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.00 | 85% – 100% | Outstanding / Excellent |
| A- | 3.70 | 80% – 84% | Excellent |
| B+ | 3.30 | 75% – 79% | Good |
| B | 3.00 | 71% – 74% | Good |
| B- | 2.70 | 68% – 70% | Good |
| C+ | 2.30 | 64% – 67% | Average |
| C | 2.00 | 60% – 63% | Average |
| C- | 1.70 | 56% – 59% | Below Average |
| D+ | 1.30 | 53% – 55% | Below Average |
| D | 1.00 | 50% – 52% | Minimum Pass |
| F | 0.00 | Below 50% | Fail |
Important — Old System vs New System: GCU used relative grading from 1999 to Fall 2021, where grades were assigned based on class performance distribution. From Fall 2021 onward, GCU uses rubric-based absolute grading — meaning your grade reflects your individual learning outcomes, assessed against a predefined rubric designed by your instructor. Students admitted before Fall 2021 may have a mix of relative and absolute grades on their transcript.
Why GCU Switched to Absolute Grading
GCU VC Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi explained the key problem with the old relative system: a student scoring 70 marks who was at the top of a low-performing class would receive an A+ — despite not reaching the actual learning outcomes expected of an A+ student. This put GCU graduates at a disadvantage in scholarship competitions and job applications where they were compared against students from universities using absolute grading. The new rubric-based system ensures every GCU grade reflects genuine academic achievement.
"By adopting the absolute marking system, we do not mean to give high grades to students. Rubrics will make marking fairer. Our teachers will design a rubric for each evaluation component of their course." — GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi (2021)
GPA Formula
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of the Semester
HEC Percentage Conversion
Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
Example: CGPA 3.25 → (3.25 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 81.25%. This is the standard HEC conversion formula used across all HEC-recognised Pakistani universities for scholarships, job applications, and degree attestation.
GCU CGPA Requirements & Academic Thresholds
GCU Lahore has specific CGPA thresholds for graduation, postgraduate admission, financial aid, and academic probation. Knowing these benchmarks helps you plan each semester strategically.
| CGPA Range | Standing / Eligibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.70 – 4.00 | Roll of Honour | Highest academic distinction at GCU Lahore |
| 3.50 – 3.69 | Excellent | Strong scholarship and postgraduate candidate |
| 3.00 – 3.49 | Good Standing | Meets PhD CGPA threshold (3.00 min) |
| 2.50 – 2.99 | Satisfactory | Min for MS/MPhil admission & financial aid (2.50) |
| 2.00 – 2.49 | Minimum | Min for BS graduation — below MS/MPhil threshold |
| Below 2.00 | Probation | Academic probation — limited semesters to recover |
GCU Probation Policy: Students placed on academic probation are given a limited number of semesters to recover their CGPA above 2.00. During probation, GCU may restrict course loads or require academic counselling. Students who fail to improve face suspension or withdrawal from the programme. GCU regulations allow one chance to pass an F-graded course — failing it again requires re-admission into the course work.
