QAU Grading System

QAU Official 4.0 Grading Scale (BS Programme)

Quaid-i-Azam University uses a 4.00 maximum GPA absolute grading system where your final percentage marks map directly to fixed letter grades and grade points. Importantly, QAU uses a non-standard grade point scale compared to most other Pakistani institutions — for instance, A- is 3.80 (not 3.67) and B- is 2.80 (not 2.67). Note that fractional marks are rounded to the nearest whole number before grading is applied.

Mark RangeLetter GradeGrade PointsStanding

72% – 75%B+3.50Very Good
68% – 71%B3.00Good
64% – 67%B-2.80Good

55% – 59%C2.00Average
50% – 54%D1.00Pass (Minimum)
Below 50%F0.00Fail

QAU Non-Standard Grade Points: QAU's grade point values differ from most Pakistani universities. A- = 3.80, B+ = 3.50, and B- = 2.80. If you are comparing your QAU CGPA to another institution's scale, always account for these differences. Using a standard HEC scale for QAU will give you an incorrect GPA result.

Mark Distribution Formula

A single QAU course aggregates 100 marks distributed across three evaluation components:

ComponentWeightageWhat It Covers
Sessional Assessment20% – 25%Homework, quizzes, class presentations, lab work
Mid-Semester Examination25% – 30%Conducted around the 8th week of the semester
Terminal Examination50%Final exam held at the end of the semester

Semester GPA Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours

Example: Course 1 (3 Credits) = B+ (3.50) + Course 2 (3 Credits) = A (4.00)
Sum = (3×3.50) + (3×4.00) = 10.50 + 12.00 = 22.50  →  SGPA = 22.50 ÷ 6 = 3.75

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of All Semesters

QAU CGPA to Percentage Formula

QAU follows the standard HEC percentage conversion formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 25

Example: CGPA 3.00 → 3.00 × 25 = 75%

"QAU uses the standard HEC formula (CGPA × 25) for percentage conversion. Use this formula for all job applications, CSS/PMS forms, and graduate school admissions — not any university-specific formula."

Academic Standing

QAU CGPA Requirements & Academic Progression Rules

QAU applies different academic standing rules for BS and postgraduate (MPhil/PhD) students. Understanding these thresholds helps you plan your studies and avoid probation or removal from the rolls.

BS Programme Academic Standing

CGPA RangeStandingWhat It Means
3.50 – 4.00ExcellentTop performance — postgraduate scholarship eligibility
2.00 – 3.49Good / SatisfactoryMeets BS progression requirements — continue improving
1.00 – 1.99Academic ProbationMaximum 2 probation periods allowed — must reach 2.00+
Below 1.00DroppedImmediate removal from university roll — no grace period

MPhil / PhD Academic Standing

CGPA RangeStandingWhat It Means
2.50 – 4.00Good StandingEligible to proceed to research thesis phase
Below 2.50CeasedRemoved from MPhil/PhD programme — no probation allowed

Course Improvement: QAU BS students who obtain a C or D grade in any course are eligible to repeat that course during the summer session to improve their CGPA. Only the improved grade is counted in the CGPA calculation after successful completion.

Mandatory Attendance: QAU requires a minimum of 80% attendance in all courses. Falling below this threshold makes you ineligible to sit in the terminal (final) examination, resulting in an automatic F grade regardless of your academic performance during the semester.

FAQ

QAU GPA & CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

Quaid-i-Azam University uses a 4.0 absolute grading scale for its BS programmes. Grades are assigned based on fixed percentage thresholds: A (80%+) = 4.00, A- (76–79%) = 3.80, B+ (72–75%) = 3.50, B (68–71%) = 3.00, B- (64–67%) = 2.80, C+ (60–63%) = 2.50, C (55–59%) = 2.00, D (50–54%) = 1.00, and F (below 50%) = 0.00. Notably, QAU's grade point values differ from most other Pakistani universities — A- is 3.80 (not 3.67), B+ is 3.50 (not 3.33), and B- is 2.80 (not 2.67).
QAU follows the standard HEC percentage conversion formula: Percentage = CGPA × 25. For example, a CGPA of 3.00 gives 3.00 × 25 = 75%. This is the same formula used by most HEC-recognised Pakistani universities and should be used for job applications, CSS/PMS examinations, and graduate school admissions.
For BS students, the minimum acceptable CGPA is 2.00. If your CGPA falls between 1.00 and 1.99, you are placed on academic probation. QAU allows a maximum of two probation periods during your degree. If you fail to raise your CGPA to 2.00 within those two probation periods, or if your CGPA falls below 1.00 in any semester, you will be dropped from the university roll.
Postgraduate (MPhil and PhD) students at QAU must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 throughout their programme to remain in good standing and be eligible to proceed to the research thesis phase. This threshold is stricter than the BS requirement. Falling below 2.50 results in a ceased status, which means removal from the programme. There is no probation period for postgraduate students — the consequences are immediate.
A single QAU course is marked out of 100 total marks distributed across three components: Sessional Assessment (20–25%) which covers homework, quizzes, class presentations, and lab work; Mid-Semester Examination (25–30%) conducted around the 8th week; and the Terminal Examination (50%) which is the final exam at the end of the semester. Fractional marks from these components are rounded to the nearest whole number before the letter grade is assigned.
QAU requires a mandatory minimum of 80% attendance in all courses. If your attendance falls below this threshold in any course, you are not permitted to sit in the terminal (final) examination for that course. This results in an automatic F grade regardless of how well you performed in your sessional assessment and mid-semester examination. Attendance records are strictly monitored throughout the semester.
Yes. QAU BS students who obtain a C or D grade in any course are eligible to repeat that course during the summer session to improve their CGPA. After successfully completing the repeated course, only the improved grade is counted in the CGPA calculation. This provision allows students to recover from poor performance in specific courses and raise their cumulative average.
QAU follows its own official BS Rules and Regulations which define a unique grade point mapping. Most Pakistani universities follow a standard HEC scale where A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, and B- = 2.67. QAU assigns A- = 3.80, B+ = 3.50, and B- = 2.80. This means a QAU CGPA may appear slightly higher than an equivalent CGPA from another institution when comparing raw numbers. Always clarify which grading scale applies when submitting your transcript for external purposes.
Yes — completely free. No sign-up, no account, no subscription required. The calculator uses QAU's official BS programme grading scale with the correct non-standard grade point values (A- = 3.80, B+ = 3.50, B- = 2.80) and the standard HEC percentage formula (CGPA × 25). It works on all devices including mobile phones and tablets.
