GCU Grading System

GCU Lahore Official Grading Scale — Post Fall 2021

GC University Lahore transitioned from a 22-year-old relative grading system to a rubric-based absolute marking system starting Fall 2021. Under the new system, your letter grade is determined by your actual marks and rubric performance — not by how you rank against classmates. GCU now uses the standard HEC-approved 4.0 absolute grading scale.

Important — Old System vs New System: GCU used relative grading from 1999 to Fall 2021, where grades were assigned based on class performance distribution. From Fall 2021 onward, GCU uses rubric-based absolute grading — meaning your grade reflects your individual learning outcomes, assessed against a predefined rubric designed by your instructor. Students admitted before Fall 2021 may have a mix of relative and absolute grades on their transcript.

Why GCU Switched to Absolute Grading

GCU VC Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi explained the key problem with the old relative system: a student scoring 70 marks who was at the top of a low-performing class would receive an A+ — despite not reaching the actual learning outcomes expected of an A+ student. This put GCU graduates at a disadvantage in scholarship competitions and job applications where they were compared against students from universities using absolute grading. The new rubric-based system ensures every GCU grade reflects genuine academic achievement.

"By adopting the absolute marking system, we do not mean to give high grades to students. Rubrics will make marking fairer. Our teachers will design a rubric for each evaluation component of their course." — GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi (2021)

GPA Formula

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours of the Semester

HEC Percentage Conversion

Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100

Example: CGPA 3.25 → (3.25 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 81.25%. This is the standard HEC conversion formula used across all HEC-recognised Pakistani universities for scholarships, job applications, and degree attestation.

FAQ

GCU Lahore GPA & CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

From Fall 2021, GC University Lahore uses a rubric-based absolute grading system on the HEC-approved 4.0 scale. Before this, GCU used a relative grading system for 22 years where grades were determined by class performance distribution. Under the new system, your grade is determined by your actual marks and how well you meet the learning outcomes defined in your instructor's rubric — not by how you rank against classmates.
The old relative grading system at GCU put students at a disadvantage in scholarship competitions and job applications. Under relative grading, a student scoring 70 marks who topped a low-performing class could receive an A+ — without meeting the actual learning outcomes of that grade. This made GCU students' grades incomparable to those from universities using absolute grading. The switch to rubric-based absolute grading ensures GCU grades reflect genuine achievement and are comparable across institutions.
Students in BS and other undergraduate programmes at GCU Lahore must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to remain eligible for graduation. Dropping below this threshold triggers academic probation. Students who fail to recover their CGPA within the probationary period may face suspension or withdrawal from the programme.
MS and MPhil admission at GCU Lahore generally requires a minimum CGPA of 2.50 in undergraduate studies. Competitive programmes and funded seats may require higher scores. PhD admission at GCU generally requires a CGPA of 3.00 or above in MS/MPhil, along with passing the relevant HEC-approved subject test.
GCU financial aid programmes typically require students to maintain satisfactory academic progress, with a particular emphasis on CGPA — often requiring 2.50 or above for financial aid eligibility. Competitive scholarships may require 3.00 or higher. Always check the specific rules of each scholarship or aid programme on the official GCU financial aid page, as requirements vary by programme and funding source.
The standard HEC formula for percentage conversion is: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. For example, a CGPA of 3.25 equals 81.25%. This conversion is used across all HEC-recognised Pakistani universities for scholarship applications, job applications, and HEC degree attestation. For official documentation, always refer to your GCU transcript — the conversion is for estimation purposes only.
The Academic Roll of Honour is GCU Lahore's highest academic distinction. It is awarded to students achieving a GPA of 3.70 or above in a semester. Students must achieve this in their first chance — re-admission cases, semester breaks, probation, and marks improvement attempts are not considered for the Roll of Honour. The first position holder in each programme may also receive additional recognition.
